While much of the NFL Draft spotlight fixated on Shedeur Sanders, another story was quietly stealing headlines — the stunning fall of former Texas standout Quinn Ewers.
Once considered a top-tier NFL prospect, Ewers made the bold decision to turn pro early, passing up lucrative NIL deals and leaving eligibility on the table. But the gamble didn’t pay off quite the way he hoped: after a long, tense wait surrounded by cameras and friends, he finally heard his name called late Saturday as the Miami Dolphins picked him 231st overall in the seventh round.
A fall like that naturally sparked questions. Did Ewers make the right call by declaring early? Or did leaving Texas too soon cost him millions?
Veteran writers Chris Vannini and Sam Khan of The Athletic have followed Ewers closely, and they agree — the slide was shocking. Vannini was stunned to see lesser-known quarterbacks taken before Ewers, while Khan noted that many draft experts, including The Athletic‘s own Dane Brugler, had Ewers pegged as a third-rounder.
Injuries, it seems, clouded his stock. Ewers battled a clavicle injury in 2022, an AC joint sprain in 2023, and played through an oblique tear in 2024. Even so, his résumé was impressive: 9,128 career passing yards, 68 touchdowns, a Big 12 championship MVP, second-team All-SEC honors, and back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances.
NFL scouts remained divided. Some believed Ewers projected as a solid backup, not a franchise cornerstone. Others, like the Dolphins’ brass, saw potential worth betting on. General Manager Chris Grier said Miami had their eye on Ewers ever since Texas’ 2024 pro day, with coach Steve Sarkisian vouching for his grit, leadership, and toughness under relentless pressure — including fending off prized recruit Arch Manning.
Ewers himself isn’t shaken. “I enjoy adversity,” he said after being drafted. “Anything I went through at Texas made me stronger.”
And while he won’t be handed the keys right away — Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson are ahead of him on the depth chart — Miami’s seventh-round flyer on Ewers could turn into one of the 2025 Draft’s biggest steals.
Don’t be surprised if this story is just getting started.
At Texas, Ewers built a legacy. In Miami, he’s ready to build something even bigger.
