Could Quinn Ewers Be the Bills’ Backup QB of the Future?
The quarterback position is one of the most valued roles in all of sports—and the Buffalo Bills are fortunate to have one of the NFL’s best in 2024 MVP Josh Allen. The team recently secured his future with a massive six-year, $330 million extension.
While Allen is locked in as the starter, the backup QB spot remains an important one. Currently, the Bills have Mitch Trubisky, Mike White, and Shane Buechele on their 90-man roster. Trubisky, the likely No. 2 this season, is entering the final year of his contract.
Looking beyond 2024, The Athletic’s Derrick Klassen suggests that the Bills might want to start grooming a long-term backup. Klassen sees Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers as an intriguing fit in Joe Brady’s offense, highlighting his arm talent and athleticism. While Ewers still needs refinement—particularly with pocket awareness and deep-ball accuracy—his skillset offers plenty of potential.
Ewers played a pivotal role in Texas’ run to the College Football Playoff Semifinals last season, throwing for 3,472 yards and a 31–12 TD/INT ratio over 14 games. Though projections place him anywhere from the second to fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Klassen notes that if Ewers falls into the fourth or fifth, he could be a smart developmental pick for Buffalo.
With Trubisky’s contract expiring and no long-term answer behind Allen, adding a young, moldable QB like Ewers might be a forward-thinking move for the Bills.
