Ex-Miami-Dade Firefighter Charged in Son’s Death During Unauthorized Training Session

A former Miami-Dade firefighter, Francisco Camero, 48, has been charged with manslaughter and culpable negligence in connection with the death of his son, Fabian Camero, 28, during an unauthorized training session in Virginia Gardens.

The training exercise, which took place on June 21, was led by Lt. Rafael Fernandez, 52, and Firefighter Steve Colon, 49. The session involved live fire training, which was not approved by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Fabian Camero, who was not a firefighter, participated in the training exercise with his brother, Lorenzo Camero, 25. During the exercise, Fabian became unresponsive and was taken to Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center, where he died the next day.

The investigation revealed that Fernandez, Camero, and Colon violated several standards for live fire training, including conducting the training in a building without proper safety measures.

Fernandez and Camero were both charged with one count of manslaughter and two counts of culpable negligence. They were booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols and training procedures within Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The department has stated that it is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
