Reports Emerge of Texas Planning to Fire Men’s Basketball Coach Rodney Terry
The Texas Longhorns’ men’s basketball team has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, and it appears that head coach Rodney Terry’s tenure is coming to an end. According to reports from Horns247 and The Field of 68, Terry will be fired after three seasons at the helm.
Terry’s departure comes on the heels of a disappointing 86-80 loss to Xavier in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns had a 10-point lead in the second half but were unable to hold on, capping off a season that saw the team finish with a 19-16 record and a 6-12 mark in the Southeastern Conference.
Despite leading the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons, Terry’s overall record of 62-37 was apparently not enough to save his job. Terry had previously served as an assistant coach at Texas from 2002-03 to 2010-11 and again in 2021-22 before taking over as interim head coach when Chris Beard was suspended during the 2022-23 season.
When asked about his job status after the loss to Xavier, Terry expressed pride in his accomplishments at Texas, stating, “I’ve been in Texas 13 years, and there’s not a year I haven’t made the NCAA Tournament or been a part of the NCAA Tournament. I have a lot of pride in terms of being a Longhorn.”
Terry’s coaching career spans over two decades, with stints as the head coach at Fresno State and UTEP. He owns a 225-193 record as a head coach and will likely be exploring opportunities to join another program as an assistant coach.
The decision to fire Terry marks the latest chapter in the University of Texas’ search for stability in its men’s basketball program. The program has undergone significant upheaval since the departure of longtime head coach Rick Barnes in 2015, and it remains to be seen who will be the next to take the reins.
