California Baptist University (CBU) alumni Taran Armstrong has made history by becoming the first former Lancer to sign a contract with the National Basketball Association (NBA). Armstrong, a standout guard during his time at CBU, has inked a two-way deal with the Golden State Warriors.
Armstrong’s impressive collegiate career was marked by numerous accolades, including being named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022. He was also an All-WAC Second Team member in 2023 and holds the DI-era record for most assists in a single season (164) and assists per game (6.3).
After leaving CBU, Armstrong played professionally in the National Basketball League (NBL) for the Cairns Taipans in his native Australia. He averaged over 17 points and nearly five assists per game in his final season with the Taipans.
The two-way contract with the Warriors will allow Armstrong to split his time between the NBA team and their G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. He will join a talented roster that includes Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and other notable players.
Armstrong’s signing is a significant milestone for CBU’s men’s basketball program, which has been on the rise in recent years. The university’s athletic department is thrilled to see one of its own achieve success at the highest level.
As Armstrong begins his NBA journey, he will become the first Tasmanian-born player to make an NBA roster. His achievement serves as an inspiration to young athletes in Australia and around the world who aspire to play in the NBA.
