The University of Texas has parted ways with head basketball coach Rodney Terry following a disappointing loss in the NCAA Tournament’s play-in game. Terry, who had been with the team for two full seasons, finished with a 40-29 record.
The Dismissal:
The firing comes after Texas suffered a heart-wrenching defeat in the NCAA Tournament play-in game. Despite having three years remaining on his contract, Terry’s tenure ended with a subpar season, including a 19-16 record in 2024-2025 and a lackluster 6-12 performance in conference play in the team’s first season in the Southeastern Conference.
Rodney Terry’s Journey at Texas:
Terry’s association with Texas began in 2002 as an assistant coach under Rick Barnes. He stepped into the head coach role in the 2022-2023 season after Chris Beard’s dismissal due to a felony charge, which was later dropped. Terry guided the team to a Big 12 Conference Tournament victory and a trip to the Elite Eight, marking Texas’ deepest NCAA Tournament run since 2008.
Following that success, Terry signed a five-year, $15 million contract, but struggles followed. In the 2023-2024 season, the Longhorns went 21-13 and were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This season, Texas struggled to regain momentum, especially in the latter part of the year.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte addressed the decision, stating, “After reviewing the program’s direction, Coach Terry and I agree it’s best to move in a different direction.” In response, Terry expressed gratitude for his time at Texas, saying, “It was a dream of mine to be the head coach of the Longhorns, and I’ll forever be a Longhorn.”
The Big Picture:
Terry’s departure comes amidst difficulties in securing top recruits, with the Longhorns having no top high school commitments for the upcoming season, except for SEC Player of the Year Tre Johnson.
