The Montreal Canadiens are on track for the playoffs, and this offseason, they should aim to bolster their roster with additional talent.
Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a platform that allows users to simulate trades, one user proposed a deal where the Canadiens acquire Marco Rossi from the Minnesota Wild.
Proposed Trade:
Canadiens Receive:
- Marco Rossi
Wild Receive:
- Owen Beck
- Kirby Dach
- 2025 First-Round Pick (from Calgary)
This proposed blockbuster trade makes sense for both teams. Montreal would secure a rising star in Rossi, while Minnesota would receive two promising young forwards and a first-round pick.
Rossi, a pending RFA, is just 23 years old and was selected ninth overall in the 2020 draft. This season, he’s been a key offensive contributor for the Wild, posting 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points in 78 games—both career highs.
In exchange, the Canadiens would part with the 2025 first-round pick they acquired from Calgary, as well as two forwards. Beck, at 21, has already made appearances in the NHL and is expected to develop into a third-line center. He has recorded 1 assist in 12 games this season.
Minnesota would also gain the more established player in Kirby Dach, who could help fill the void left by Rossi’s potential departure. Dach, who is set to become an RFA after the 2024-25 season, has one year remaining on his four-year, $13.45 million contract. Despite undergoing season-ending surgery, he still managed to post 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in 57 games.
Analyst Russ Cohen of The Hockey News has suggested that the Canadiens should make a push to acquire Rossi this summer, as the Wild will be facing salary cap challenges, with Rossi due for a substantial contract extension.
