Mario Cristobal provides an update on player injuries ahead of the upcoming game against Wake Forest.

Ahead of Miami’s upcoming game against Wake Forest, head coach Mario Cristobal spoke with reporters, providing updates on several key players’ injury statuses. Cristobal confirmed that cornerback Damari Brown, offensive lineman Ryan Rodriguez, and edge rusher Elijah Alston have all been cleared to practice, but their availability for the game will be determined closer to kickoff.

Brown and Rodriguez have both been sidelined since the season opener against Florida. Brown’s absence has been particularly impactful, as Miami’s secondary has struggled without him, allowing 203.8 passing yards per game, ranking 50th nationally. They have also given up five completions of 50 yards or more, placing them 105th. At 6’2″, Brown’s presence in the defensive backfield would provide much-needed depth and length, especially with the recent loss of cornerback Jaidus Richard for the season.

Rodriguez, a redshirt junior, was expected to play a key role on the offensive line in 2024 after starting six games and earning one start last season. With Rodriguez out, Matthew McCoy has stepped in at left guard, especially when Jalen Rivers has been unavailable due to injury. Miami has also shuffled its offensive line, with Rivers moving to guard from left tackle and Markel Bell stepping into Rivers’ tackle spot.

Alston, who has recorded 15 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery this season, has provided significant depth to Miami’s defensive line. He started the final four games in September when Rueben Bain was injured. However, the defensive line’s ability to create pressure has been inconsistent in recent weeks.

Cristobal acknowledged the challenges Miami has faced due to injuries, particularly in the secondary and along the defensive line. He compared the limitations of college rosters to NFL teams’ 53-man rosters, noting that the injuries have tested Miami’s depth.

Despite these setbacks, Miami is starting to get healthier at a critical time. With the chance to secure a spot in the ACC Championship Game by winning their final two regular-season games, Cristobal emphasized that the team is focused on taking it one game at a time. He assured that the injured players remain involved with the team, maintaining a strong presence during their recovery and rehab process.

Cristobal also reiterated that the team is not looking past Wake Forest and continues to approach each meeting and practice with full attention, keeping their sights set on the immediate challenge ahead.
