An 11-year-old boy named Iremide Opeifa tragically drowned in a swimming pool at the Grand Bank Link Hotels on Idiroko Road in the Sango/Ota area of Ogun State. The incident occurred on Sunday after Iremide had finished helping his mother at her shop. After parting ways with his brother, who was returning home, Iremide went to the hotel, where he was later found unresponsive by the pool.
Kehinde Opeifa, the boy’s aunt, criticized the hotel management for failing to provide any medical assistance before Iremide’s mother arrived. She recounted that Iremide’s brother, after discovering him at the hotel, alerted their mother. The family found Iremide’s lifeless body on the floor, with no attempts made to take him to the hospital.
The family also questioned the hotel staff for allowing such a young boy into the pool after taking money from him. The mother reported the incident to the Onipanu Police Division in Ota and then rushed Iremide to three hospitals, where he was ultimately pronounced dead on arrival.
Another relative, Modupe Babafemi, alleged that the police did not inspect Iremide’s body and pressured the boy’s mother to sign an affidavit agreeing not to pursue legal action.
