Celtics’ Sam Hauser Secures 4-Year, $45M Extension.
BOSTON, MA* – Sam Hauser of the Boston Celtics has agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract extension. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that this move is part of Boston’s strategy to retain their championship roster. Although this deal won’t affect the team’s salary cap for the 2024-25 season, it will notably increase their luxury tax bill starting in 2025-26. Currently, the Celtics are $7.6 million over the second tax apron for next season.
Hauser, who averaged 9.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last season and shot 42.4% from three-point range, improved his performance during the NBA Finals, hitting 47.8% of his threes against the Dallas Mavericks.
Boston has also extended Jayson Tatum and Derrick White with nine-figure contracts this offseason, securing their position as a second-apron team for the foreseeable future. Hauser’s new salary will be just below the non-taxpayer midlevel exception. While he can’t be combined with another player in trades, the front office could use Hauser and a draft pick in negotiations for veteran players in the $10-11 million salary range.
Hauser’s contract will likely become more valuable starting in 2025-26. Additionally, the Celtics might consider extending guard Jaden Springer with an increased salary for added flexibility, similar to how the Philadelphia 76ers re-signed Kenyon Martin Jr. earlier this summer.
