Just days before Georgia’s highly anticipated College Football Playoff showdown with Notre Dame, the Bulldogs have made their official decision regarding quarterback Carson Beck.
Initially, reports from ESPN hinted that Beck’s return was doubtful after sustaining an injury to his throwing arm during the SEC Championship against Texas. Speculation grew that Beck might require surgery and had not participated in practice with the team.
Georgia has now put the rumors to rest, confirming that Beck underwent surgery on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The procedure, performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, was a success. Beck is expected to fully recover, with plans to resume throwing by spring 2025.
In the wake of the news, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg asked analyst Paul Finebaum if Beck’s absence would sink Georgia’s title chances. Finebaum remained optimistic, revealing that the Bulldogs had been preparing for this outcome since the SEC Championship. “They knew Gunner Stockton would be the guy for the Sugar Bowl. I think they’ll be fine, Greeny,” Finebaum said.
Stockton stepped in for Beck during the SEC title game, orchestrating an overtime comeback by completing 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards, though he threw one interception.
Head coach Kirby Smart expressed confidence in Stockton’s readiness. “Gunner’s skill set is different from Carson’s, but we’ve been ready for this,” Smart said. “As the backup, he’s always been one play away from stepping in, and we’ve prepared for that every week.”
Georgia and Notre Dame are set to collide on New Year’s Day in what promises to be a thrilling playoff matchup.
