In a surprising turn of events, Alabama redshirt sophomore tight end Danny Lewis has decided to withdraw his name from the transfer portal and remain with the Crimson Tide, a move that could have a significant impact on Alabama’s tight end depth heading into 2024.
Lewis, who initially entered the portal on December 9, appeared to be looking for opportunities elsewhere. However, just days later, he reversed course and recommitted to Alabama, signaling his determination to compete for a more prominent role in Tuscaloosa.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 257 pounds, Lewis has primarily been a special teams contributor during his Crimson Tide career, appearing in 31 games and logging one reception for five yards. While his offensive impact has been limited, Lewis now has a golden opportunity to step up, especially with Alabama’s tight end room undergoing significant changes.
The departures of seniors CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts have left the position thin, with only a few scholarship tight ends remaining on the roster, including redshirt junior Josh Cuevas, freshman Jay Lindsey, and redshirt freshman Ty Lockwood. Lewis’ return provides a boost of experience to a group in transition, but it’s likely head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff will still explore the transfer portal to strengthen the position.
Lewis came to Alabama as a three-star recruit from Westgate High School in New Iberia, Louisiana. Ranked as the No. 32 tight end in the nation and the No. 28 prospect in Louisiana, he committed to the Crimson Tide in February 2022. Now, he’s looking to rise above his early career challenges and prove he belongs in a bigger role on one of college football’s most competitive rosters.
With the transfer portal window open until December 28 and a second window in April, Alabama will likely continue reshaping its roster. But for Lewis, the decision is made—he’s staying with the Tide and is ready to take on whatever comes next. This move signals not just loyalty but a hunger to fight for his place and make an impact in 2024.
