Urban Meyer Denies Coaching Comeback Rumors, Reaffirms Support for Ryan Day Amid Speculation
Despite a fourth consecutive loss to Michigan and growing chatter about potential changes in leadership, Ryan Day remains Ohio State’s head coach, with the program signaling its belief in his ability to guide the Buckeyes forward. Yet rumors of a shakeup—and even the possibility of Urban Meyer returning to the sidelines—have been dominating discussions among fans and analysts. Meyer, one of the most successful coaches in Buckeye history, has now broken his silence, addressing the speculation and offering a strong endorsement of Day.
In a statement released through Tim May of *Letterman Row*, Meyer unequivocally shut down the idea of a return to coaching. “Reports of my return to the sidelines in Columbus have reached me,” Meyer wrote. “While I thoroughly enjoyed my seven seasons as head coach at THE Ohio State University, I have no interest in coaching again. I will always be a Buckeye and have full confidence in Ryan Day, his staff, and every player that puts on the Scarlet and Grey.”
The rumors gained traction after Ohio State’s loss to Michigan, which dropped Day’s record against the Wolverines to 1-4. Comparisons to Meyer’s spotless 6-0 record in *The Game* have fueled frustration among fans, leading some to question whether Day is the right man to lead Ohio State back to championship glory. Meyer, however, made it clear that he believes in Day’s abilities, pushing back against the growing narrative that a coaching change is necessary.
Meyer’s support carries weight, given his legacy in Columbus. During his seven years as head coach (2012–2018), Meyer led the Buckeyes to an 83-9 record, three Big Ten Championships, and a National Title in 2014. His dominance over Michigan became a hallmark of his tenure, making him a revered figure among Buckeye faithful. Meyer retired after the 2018 season, citing health concerns, but his name often resurfaces when Ohio State struggles, underscoring his lasting impact on the program.
As Ohio State awaits its College Football Playoff fate, Day faces enormous pressure to prove his critics wrong. Meyer’s public vote of confidence is significant, but it won’t silence speculation entirely. For Day, the best way to end the rumors is by delivering results on the field.
