Alabama officially confirmed the hiring of Ryan Grubb as its new offensive coordinator on Thursday.
Grubb’s return to Kalen DeBoer’s staff was first reported last Sunday, quickly drawing positive reactions. While former Alabama head coach Nick Saban attempted to recruit Grubb ahead of the 2023 season, Grubb chose to stay at Washington and help guide the team to the College Football Playoff National Championship game. After DeBoer took over at Alabama, Grubb again became a candidate for the OC role but instead accepted a position with the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, after a year apart, Grubb and DeBoer are reuniting.
“Ryan Grubb is someone I have trusted for a long time, and adding him to our staff only strengthens the quality of coaches here at Alabama,” DeBoer said in a statement. “He’s one of the top offensive minds in the country, and I’m excited to see what he brings to our team.”
Grubb previously worked as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach with DeBoer at Sioux Falls, where they won NAIA national championships. They continued to collaborate at Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, and Washington, where Grubb’s impact helped elevate quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s career, leading him to become a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2023.
“I’m grateful for the chance to work with Coach DeBoer again and join an offensive staff I know well,” Grubb said. “I believe we’ll position this team to win every time, and I’m eager to get on the field with them.”
Grubb played a key role in recruiting quarterback Austin Mack to Washington, and Mack, now at Alabama, will compete for the starting job with Ty Simpson and Keelon Russell in spring and summer training. Additionally, Nick Sheridan and JaMarcus Shephard, who worked with Grubb at Washington, are expected to remain on Alabama’s staff.
