Amid a challenging period for Indiana athletics, some positive news emerged.
Bryant Haines, the Hoosiers’ defensive coordinator, has finalized a new contract to remain at Indiana, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Haines had previously been linked to the Penn State defensive coordinator position, which ultimately went to Jim Knowles of Ohio State.
Haines, a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach, played a pivotal role in Indiana’s standout defensive performance this past season. After joining the Hoosiers from James Madison, Haines helped lead a defense that finished No. 2 nationally in total defense, allowing just 256.3 yards per game.
Before the season, Haines had already signed an agreement that increased his salary, and this new contract follows interest from both Penn State and Notre Dame. He was previously the highest-paid assistant in program history.
