The injury to Indiana guard Malik Reneau comes at a challenging time for the Hoosiers, as they enter the heart of conference play. Despite missing their leading scorer, the Hoosiers managed to secure wins over Rutgers and Penn State, but with tough opponents like Illinois and Iowa ahead, other players will need to step up.
Against Rutgers, Myles Rice led the team in scoring, while Oumar Ballo took charge in the Penn State game. Moving forward, it’s unlikely that one player will carry the load, but there are certain individuals who can make a bigger impact.
With Reneau sidelined due to his lower-body injury, Coach Mike Woodson has indicated it’s uncertain how long he’ll be out. These three players will need to consistently rise to the occasion for Indiana to continue their winning ways.
- Oumar Ballo
Ballo delivered an outstanding performance against Penn State, recording 25 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. After facing some struggles earlier in the season, the 7-foot senior has been playing with renewed energy. He is averaging 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds, leading the team in boards, and has been a dominant force on defense with 1.9 blocks per game. Ballo also has the second-highest shooting percentage on the team at 66.7%. His size and close-range shooting ability will help him handle increased defensive pressure in Reneau’s absence, and his 2.5 assists per game demonstrate his playmaking ability. - Mackenzie Mgbako
Mgbako is averaging 14.1 points per game, matching Reneau’s production. The 6-foot-9 sophomore has been settling into his role, averaging 27.1 minutes per game. Although his shooting percentage sits at 49%, he excels from beyond the arc, shooting 42.4%. As Reneau remains out, Mgbako’s ability to hit key three-pointers will be crucial for the team. - Myles Rice
When Reneau was injured in the opening seconds against Rutgers, Rice stepped up and led the Hoosiers with 21 points. His scoring average has since risen to 12.0 points per game, and he’s also contributing 3.2 assists per game. Rice can help fill the gap left by Reneau by creating scoring opportunities for others and drawing defenders, which could free up shots for teammates.
With these three players stepping up, Indiana has a strong chance of continuing to succeed despite the absence of their star player.
