The NFL decisively outpaced the College Football Playoff (CFP) in viewership on Saturday, as the league faced off against the CFP during key matchups. The Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers games were scheduled at the same times as the first-round CFP games, with NFL viewership more than doubling the CFP’s numbers.
According to David Rumsey of Front Office Sports, the NFL’s total viewership reached 30.9 million, while the CFP garnered just 15 million. The disparity was evident across both time slots, with the NFL games attracting far larger audiences than the CFP contests.
On social media, fans expressed mixed reactions, with some criticizing college football’s quality, likening it to “minor league baseball” or “D League basketball.” Others argued that college football is superior to the NFL, though many voiced frustration over the NFL’s decision to schedule big games against the CFP, accusing the league of undermining college football’s spotlight.
