After Clemson’s disappointing 38-24 loss to Texas, ending any hopes of a third national championship under head coach Dabo Swinney, the focus has shifted to retooling for 2025. With a defense that was gashed by Texas’ running backs, Clemson now faces the task of bolstering its roster, particularly in the trenches. Swinney, previously criticized for his reluctance to engage with the transfer portal, now has an opportunity to adjust to the evolving landscape of college football. Rival Miami has already made moves, securing top portal targets, while Clemson must act quickly to address its needs.
The following are the key players Clemson should target in the transfer portal:
- Jamel Howard, Defensive Tackle, Wisconsin
At 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds, Howard could provide the muscle Clemson needs in the interior defensive line. He recently entered the portal on the same day as the Clemson-Texas game and is a strong candidate to fill a critical need for the Tigers. - Tyler Onyedim, Defensive End, Iowa State
Onyedim, a 6-foot-4, 296-pound defensive end, brings experience to the table. He earned Big 12 honorable mention honors in 2023, recording 42 tackles and two sacks. With four years of college football under his belt, Onyedim could add depth to Clemson’s defensive line. - David Latu, Defensive Tackle, BYU
Latu, standing at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, could help fix Clemson’s run defense issues. Though his playing time at BYU was limited in 2024, his past success at Snow College and his potential as an interior defender make him an appealing option for Clemson. - Justice Haynes, Running Back, Alabama
The running back position is another area that needs attention, especially with Phil Mafah’s departure. Haynes, who entered the portal on December 13, is one of the top running backs available. His departure from Alabama has caught the attention of several programs, including in-state rival South Carolina.
As Clemson shifts its focus to the 2025 season, Swinney’s approach to the transfer portal will be crucial in shaping the Tigers’ future success.
