Denver Broncos head coach criticized after heartbreaking broncos defeat due to ..

The Denver Broncos’ dreams of securing a playoff spot crumbled in devastating fashion on Thursday, as they squandered an 11-point second-half lead to lose 34-27 to the Los Angeles Chargers. The defeat, which could have marked their first playoff berth since 2015, left the Broncos in a tie with their division rivals and reeling from a missed opportunity. The loss has put head coach Sean Payton under scrutiny for his postgame comments, particularly his attempt to explain why his team couldn’t seal the deal in such a crucial game.

With a promising 11-point lead midway through the third quarter, the Broncos seemed on the verge of a breakthrough, but their defense faltered badly in the final moments. The Chargers capitalized, scoring three unanswered touchdowns to snatch victory from the Broncos’ grasp. Payton, clearly frustrated, blamed the team’s defensive breakdowns on the “short week,” suggesting the quick turnaround made it even harder for the team to prepare.

“We dropped coverage five different times tonight,” Payton said somberly. “Look, on a short week, we’ve got to look closely at why these things are happening. But five different times, we had free runners, and you can’t have one of their top receivers not covered.”

But the excuse didn’t sit well with everyone, including Broncos reporter Zach Bye, who sharply pointed out that the team had willingly accepted the Thursday night slot. “Sean Payton used the phrase ‘on a short week’ in one of his answers about the defense giving up free runners,” Bye wrote. “No. You can’t point to the ‘short week’ when the NFL literally asked you if you want to be flexed into the primetime Thursday slot, and you said ‘yes.’”

Now, with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the Broncos have nine days to regroup before facing the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. Although CBS Sports still gives them an 86% chance of making the playoffs, the weight of the loss lingers, a painful reminder of what could hav
