As the Alabama Crimson Tide (9-3) prepare for their much-anticipated New Year’s Eve rematch against the Michigan Wolverines (7-5) in the ReliaQuest Bowl, they’ve been struck with a significant loss in their defense.
Standout cornerback DeVonta Smith has entered the NCAA transfer portal, shaking up Alabama’s roster ahead of the big game. On3 Sports broke the news, stating, *”NEWS: Alabama CB DeVonta Smith has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.”*
Smith, a former four-star recruit from Cincinnati, made his mark in his fourth season with the Tide. The 6-foot, 205-pound defensive back started 11 of 12 games this year, racking up 30 tackles, five pass deflections, and a forced fumble. After patiently waiting for his chance, Smith became a pivotal player in Alabama’s secondary—but now, he’s seeking a fresh chapter as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility left.
Smith isn’t the only one leaving. He joins a growing list of Tide players departing for the portal, including Justice Haynes, Dylan Lonergan, Jahlil Hurley, and Kobe Prentice.
With the Tide’s roster facing turbulence, the question remains: Can Alabama overcome these challenges and finish strong in their battle against Michigan? The stakes have never been higher for Nick Saban’s squad.
