After suffering his first defeat of the season in a 31-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback faces a financial penalty from the NFL. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the league imposed a $14,069 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during the game.
Pelissero reported the fine was due to a gesture made in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass, which the league deemed a “violent gesture.” The NFL has been cracking down on such actions, including gun-related gestures, as part of its effort to enforce stricter conduct guidelines. Players are briefed annually on acceptable celebrations, and gun gestures are explicitly prohibited in the rulebook.
This isn’t the quarterback’s first fine after a Bills loss. Last season, he was fined $50,000 for criticizing officials during a December matchup. Reflecting on that incident, he acknowledged the importance of accepting consequences and learning from mistakes.
The Bills’ win over the Chiefs marked their ninth victory of the season, propelling them into their bye week with a 9-2 record—the franchise’s best start in over three decades.
Two other players from the game also received fines. Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa was fined $15,400 for unnecessary roughness following a hip-drop tackle, while Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones was fined $11,255 for a facemask violation.
