“Beneath the Bench: Uncovering 66-Sack Edge Rusher’s Hidden Struggles”

After being traded to the Atlanta Falcons this season, edge rusher Matthew Judon is set to become a free agent, with the Ravens and Chargers emerging as possible destinations.

Judon, a Pro Bowl linebacker, was once a dominant force with the New England Patriots before being traded to Atlanta, as the Patriots sought to build draft capital. Despite the move, Judon had an impressive 2022 season, recording over 15 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback pressures.

Originally drafted in 2016, the four-time Pro Bowler was on track to be one of the top edge defenders in the league with the Ravens. However, due to cap space issues, Baltimore couldn’t extend his contract, allowing the Patriots to sign him to a four-year deal that didn’t last the full term. Since joining the Falcons, Judon has struggled, with only 1.5 sacks and six quarterback pressures this season. His performance led to a brief benching, though he was quickly reinstated to the starting lineup. It’s possible the Falcons could release him before the end of the year, making him a prime candidate for teams seeking a veteran pass rusher.

Judon could provide the spark that a championship-contending team needs, which is why both the Ravens and Chargers might be interested in bringing him in.

Baltimore’s Need for Judon

The Ravens have built a potent offense, with Lamar Jackson leading the charge, and strengthened their run game by signing Derrick Henry. However, they’ve struggled to replace key defensive players lost in the offseason, and the pass rush has been inconsistent, with players like David Ojabo and Odafe Oweh not living up to expectations. Adding Judon could boost the Ravens’ pass rush, making life easier for their secondary, which has struggled at times this season. With Judon’s experience, he could provide the pressure needed to help the secondary force turnovers and improve the overall defense.

The Chargers’ Need for Judon

After a slow start, the Los Angeles Chargers have found their rhythm, with Justin Herbert playing at a high level and wide receivers like Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston emerging. However, the team’s defense has room for improvement, especially with Khalil Mack set to be a free agent in 2025. Judon could fill a short-term role, giving the Chargers a reliable pass rusher while they look to build their defense for the future. With Joey Bosa’s future uncertain due to injury concerns, releasing him might open up a spot for Judon, who could contribute immediately on a one-year deal.
