Kevon Walker, a Buffalo native and recent graduate of Canisius High School, tragically passed away this week while attending Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania. Canisius High School Principal Tom Coppola expressed his grief on Facebook, describing Walker as “a larger-than-life presence” at the school. “His graduation day was such a proud moment for him and his family,” Coppola said, offering heartfelt condolences to Walker’s loved ones.
Following the news of Walker’s death, his high school football coach, Kraig Kurzanski, joined Principal Coppola in meeting with the students to discuss honoring Walker’s memory. The school also made counselors available to help support the grieving students. In a similar gesture, Saint Francis University held a mass to allow the campus community to remember Walker.
James Downer, the university’s Director of Athletics, shared a tribute, saying, “The entirety of the department is heartbroken over the tragic and untimely loss of Kevon. Although his time at Saint Francis was short, he made a positive impact on the football program. He was well-liked, respected by his teammates, and showed great promise for the future with the Red Flash. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.”
According to Walker’s family, the cause of death was confirmed to be sepsis, though additional toxicology tests are being conducted to rule out any other factors. The family clarified that there was no foul play involved.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Kevon Walker’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time.
