A runner participating in the Southend Half Marathon for charity tragically collapsed and passed away during the race in Shoeburyness, Essex.
The East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) responded to a medical emergency on Mess Road just before 11:00 BST, dispatching two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer, and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. Despite their best efforts, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Held annually to support Havens Hospices the event has been a cherished tradition for 28 years. In a heartfelt statement, the charity expressed its deep sorrow, confirming that the runner’s family had been informed.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm a runner has died,” the charity said. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and the entire running community during this incredibly difficult time.”
