Ex-Detroit Lions Draft Pick, Arrested and jailed Over Involvement in Capitol Riot

Former Detroit Lions linebacker Antwione Williams was arrested on Thursday in connection with his role in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. The arrest shines a spotlight on the serious legal repercussions for individuals, including former professional athletes, who were involved in the insurrection.

Williams, who was drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, was taken into custody in Savannah, Georgia, facing seven criminal charges. These include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and engaging in violent acts within a restricted area. Federal prosecutors allege that Williams forcefully pushed through barricades, physically confronted officers, and even tried to take a bicycle rack from one of them.

During his rookie season with the Lions, Williams appeared in 14 games, making three starts and recording 27 tackles. However, his playing time was limited, and after his tenure with Detroit, he went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants before his NFL career ended.

Williams’ arrest serves as part of the broader effort to hold accountable those involved in the Capitol riot. It underscores the long-term impact of that day’s events, affecting people from all backgrounds, including former NFL players like Williams. Now, with legal charges pending, Williams faces consequences that could overshadow his brief career in professional football.
