Former Detroit Lions linebacker facing charges for assaulting police during the January 6th riot.

**Former Detroit Lions Linebacker Faces Charges for Role in January 6 Capitol Riot**

A former Detroit Lions draft pick and linebacker, Leander Antwione Williams, is now facing federal charges in connection to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The 31-year-old Williams, who played just one season for the Lions, is charged with assaulting and obstructing law enforcement officers during the violent insurrection. He was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, on Thursday, following an investigation by federal authorities.

Williams, a fifth-round pick by the Lions in 2016, had a brief career in the NFL. After his rookie season with Detroit, where he appeared in 14 games and recorded 27 tackles, Williams bounced around the league but never played in another NFL game. His post-football journey led him to the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020, though he was waived and ultimately decided to pursue a law degree.

According to court documents, Williams was one of the first individuals to breach the restricted perimeter near the Peace Monument during the riot. Videos later surfaced showing him in a violent altercation with multiple officers outside the Capitol. The criminal complaint further details Williams’ involvement: “After rioters retook the West Plaza, Williams joined in chants of ‘U.S.A.!’ while pumping his fists in the air.” It was also reported that he took some time to recover after being sprayed with chemicals during the clash but eventually made his way to the Lower West Terrace.

The January 6 attack resulted in widespread violence, with more than 140 officers assaulted during the chaos. In the aftermath, over 1,500 individuals have been charged for their roles in the riot, which aimed to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

This is not the first time a former athlete has found themselves in trouble after the riot. Williams’ involvement in the insurrection highlights how the events of that day continue to have repercussions for many, including former professional athletes.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Williams’ case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing investigations into the January 6th riot and the serious consequences for those involved in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.
