The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off their bye week after making significant changes to their coaching staff.
The team decided to part ways with three offensive staff members, including offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. In his place, Scott Turner was appointed as the interim offensive coordinator, with his father, Norv Turner, also joining the staff in an advisory capacity.
However, one key decision that remained unchanged was at the quarterback position. Despite benching Gardner Minshew three times in the first nine games, head coach Antonio Pierce announced on Wednesday that Minshew would remain the starting quarterback. Pierce expressed his uncertainty about the move, saying, “What do we got to lose at this point, right? We’re 2-7… I’m looking forward.”
While Minshew may appreciate the opportunity, some fans believe he may be more likely to contribute to the team’s poor performance than Desmond Ridder would. Minshew, who was added to the team in late October, has yet to be named the permanent starter, despite replacing Ridder a few times. This has led some fans to speculate that the team is intentionally positioning itself for a higher draft pick. One fan joked, “Minshew gives them the best chance to lose,” while another added, “Committed to the tank. Respect.” Others also pointed out that while Ridder may offer a better chance to win, Minshew might be more suited to help the team secure the No. 1 pick. Both quarterbacks have had their struggles throughout their careers, and neither is seen as the future of the Raiders. However, the team may be using the remainder of the season to determine which quarterback would be the better backup option for whoever they draft or sign in the offseason. Currently, the Raiders are projected to hold the No. 5 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
