Surprise Cut Leads to Linebacker Joining Divisional Rival
In a surprising move that shifts the balance within the AFC East, linebacker Tyrel Dodson, recently waived by the Seattle Seahawks, has been claimed by the Miami Dolphins. The news comes just as speculation was swirling that the Buffalo Bills might bring back the former linebacker to bolster their own linebacker corps. Instead, Dodson will now be suiting up for a division rival.
Dodson’s Unexpected Departure from Seattle
Dodson, who had been a key contributor for Seattle this season, started all nine games and led the team with 71 tackles. His release caught many off guard, especially given his solid performance and leadership on defense. The unexpected cut opened the door for the Bills, who are dealing with injury concerns at linebacker, to potentially add depth to their defense. However, with the Dolphins holding the top spot on the waiver wire, they seized the opportunity to bring in the versatile linebacker.
A Familiar Face Returns to the AFC East
Tyrel Dodson first entered the NFL with the Buffalo Bills in 2019 as an undrafted free agent. After spending much of his rookie season on the practice squad, he made a significant leap in 2020, earning more playing time and establishing himself as a reliable defender. Over four seasons with the Bills, Dodson played in 68 games, recording 143 tackles and 4.5 sacks. His familiarity with the AFC East and his proven ability as a starter made him an appealing option for Buffalo—until the Dolphins beat them to the punch.
Seahawks’ Strategic Decision to Move On
While Dodson’s release may have surprised many, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald explained the rationale behind the decision. Rather than demote Dodson or keep him in a backup role, the team opted to release him to give other linebackers, including rookie Tyrice Knight, an opportunity to step into a larger role. Macdonald emphasized that the move was also made with Dodson’s best interests in mind, allowing him to find a new team where he could continue contributing.
“We really appreciate Tyrel,” Macdonald said. “He’s put in a tremendous amount of work, especially in rehab. But when we assessed where we were as a team, we felt it was the best decision to move forward and give other guys a shot, while also giving Tyrel a chance to finish the season on a high note with another team.”
Buffalo Bills Could Soon Get Key Defensive Reinforcement
While the Dolphins now have Dodson, the Bills may still be on the verge of a significant defensive upgrade. Head coach Sean McDermott recently announced that linebacker Matt Milano has been activated for practice, triggering a 21-day window for his potential return. Milano, who has been sidelined since suffering a torn pectoral muscle in training camp, has made remarkable progress in his recovery, and his return would provide a much-needed boost to Buffalo’s defense.
Although Milano is not expected to play in this Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, McDermott expressed optimism about his progress. “We’re going to take it one week at a time,” McDermott said. “Matt has worked incredibly hard, and we’ll evaluate his status as we move through practice. We’re excited to see where he’s at and what his return might mean for our defense.”
With Milano potentially returning soon, the Bills’ linebacker corps is poised to strengthen at a critical point in the season.
