Former Buffalo Bills linebacker Tyrel Dodson will not be returning to his old team, as he was picked up by the Miami Dolphins, a divisional rival. Dodson was unexpectedly waived by the Seattle Seahawks, where he had been a starter in all nine games this season, leading the team with 71 tackles. Some speculated the Bills might claim Dodson to address their linebacker needs, but the Dolphins, higher on the waiver list, claimed him instead.
Dodson initially joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2019, moving from the practice squad to a larger role by 2020. Over four seasons, he played 68 games with 143 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Although the Bills might have considered Dodson to fill in while linebackers Matt Milano and Baylon Spector recover from injuries, the Dolphins’ claim secured Dodson’s spot in the AFC East.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald explained that releasing Dodson was intended to create opportunities for other linebackers, including rookie Tyrice Knight, rather than demoting Dodson. Macdonald expressed appreciation for Dodson’s hard work, noting that the move allows Dodson to continue his career with a significant role elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the Bills may see a defensive boost soon, as head coach Sean McDermott announced that linebacker Matt Milano has started his 21-day practice window to return. Although Milano won’t play against the Kansas City Chiefs, his return is possible in the coming weeks, depending on his progress. McDermott emphasized a cautious approach, with Milano making a strong recovery from a training camp injury.
