Legendary New York Rangers play-by-play announcer Sam Rosen has announced that he will retire after the 2024-25 NHL season. Rosen, who just turned 77, has been the voice of the Rangers since 1984, following Jim Gordon. He shared that he started considering retirement after a surprise 75th birthday party thrown by his wife, realizing it was time to go out on a high note. Rosen expressed gratitude to the fans who have supported him throughout his career and hopes for a strong final season for the Rangers.

Rosen, originally from Germany but raised in Brooklyn, became a sports broadcasting icon, particularly known for his call during the Rangers’ 1994 Stanley Cup victory, where he famously exclaimed, “The waiting is over! The New York Rangers are the Stanley Cup champions.” This call, made during the last Stanley Cup Finals to feature local broadcasts, has become a defining moment in Rangers history.

MSG Networks President Andrea Greenberg announced that Rosen will be honored throughout his final season. Although a successor has not yet been named, Kenny Albert, currently TNT’s lead NHL announcer and a longtime radio voice for the Rangers, is a likely candidate, though his busy schedule may lead to Don La Greca, who often fills in, becoming the full-time radio voice.
