Mathias Gidsel’s Journey Toward the Trophy

Mathias Gidsel’s career can be summed up as: he came, he saw, he conquered. Gidsel, a standout handball player, made a significant impact by scoring ten goals in his first World Championship match and being named to the All-star team at 21. He left his Danish home at 15 to join GOG Gudme and eventually became one of the best backcourt players globally.

Top European clubs were eager to sign him, but he chose Füchse Berlin and extended his contract until 2028. At the 2021 World Championship, he was a rising star for the world champions, and he was named MVP at the Tokyo Olympics and to the All-star team. Despite a cruciate ligament injury at the EHF EURO 2022, he returned strong, becoming the top scorer and MVP at the 2023 World Championship with 60 goals.

Now 24, Gidsel aims for his first trophy with Füchse Berlin at the EHF Finals 2023 in Flensburg. He joined Berlin to win trophies, not to finish in lower ranks. Facing Montpellier Handball in the semi-final, he anticipates a tough match but remains confident.

Gidsel’s performance was crucial in Berlin’s journey to Flensburg. After a tough first leg against Kadetten Schaffhausen, he led the team to victory in the second leg with ten goals, securing their spot in the EHF Finals.

Gidsel is pleased with his first season in Berlin, enjoying the club, its ambitions, and the city’s vibrant atmosphere. He envisions a future where Füchse Berlin makes history by winning significant titles, including the Bundesliga.

Despite the challenges ahead, Gidsel is optimistic about winning the European League, with strong support from Danish fans expected in Flensburg. He views his career as a journey, aspiring to create memorable moments and achieve further success.

Hans Lindberg, Gidsel’s teammate and a role model, inspires him. Lindberg, at 41, recently became the all-time top scorer in the Bundesliga, showcasing longevity and excellence in the sport. Gidsel hopes to follow in his footsteps and achieve great success in his handball journey.
