Former Astros Star Dallas Keuchel Hits Free Agency After Brewers Roster Move

On June 26, 2024, the Milwaukee Brewers made a roster move, designating starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment, leading the 36-year-old left-hander to opt for free agency on Wednesday. This marks his availability for any team, including a potential return to the Houston Astros, though it’s uncertain if there is interest.

Keuchel, who signed with Milwaukee following his release by the Chicago White Sox in May 2022, has bounced between several teams, including Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, Seattle, and Milwaukee, mostly on minor-league deals. He managed to make a few Major League starts with each team except Seattle before being designated for assignment.

Milwaukee acquired Keuchel from the Seattle Mariners on June 25 in a cash deal, seeking depth amid pitching injuries. He made four starts for the Brewers, pitching 16.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and eight walks, but batters hit .329 against him.

Since suffering a back injury in Chicago in 2021, Keuchel has struggled to regain his form. After signing a three-year, $55 million contract with the White Sox in 2020, he posted a 7.88 ERA in eight starts in 2022. His best recent performance came with Minnesota in 2023, where he pitched 6 1/3 perfect innings in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Keuchel began his MLB career with the Houston Astros in 2012, after being selected in the seventh round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He played a key role in the Astros’ 2017 World Series title, winning the Cy Young Award in 2015 with a 20-8 record and a 2.48 ERA. During his time with Houston, he went 76-63 with a 3.66 ERA. Over his career, the two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner holds a record of 103-92 with a 4.04 ERA.
