Why did they choose Ocon over Kevin? I understand that Kevin was overwhelmed by the Hulk, but why Ocon?

Analysis: Why Haas Chose Ocon and What It Reveals About Their Plans**

Haas has secured their driver lineup for the next season earlier than usual, signing Esteban Ocon, a one-time race winner, alongside rookie Ollie Bearman before the summer break. This move underscores Haas’ growing appeal, with 27-year-old Ocon, a veteran of 146 starts, choosing them despite interest from Sauber/Audi and Williams.

**Why Ocon Chose Haas:**
Ocon has been considering his future since the beginning of the year. His contract with Alpine ends this season, and it became clear that both parties were heading in different directions. Alpine favored Pierre Gasly over Ocon, prompting Ocon to explore opportunities with other teams for a fresh start.

Ocon, managed by Mercedes, assessed his options, including discussions with Sauber/Audi and Williams. Despite this, Haas was always his top choice. Ocon has a good relationship with Ayao Komatsu, Haas’ Team Principal, who engineered Ocon during his first F1 test with Lotus in 2014. This trust, combined with Komatsu’s strong pursuit of him, made Ocon feel valued.

At Haas, Ocon will be their first-ever race-winning driver and the team’s leader, a role he relishes. Haas offers a smaller, family-like environment focused solely on racing, free from extensive politics. This atmosphere has previously helped Kevin Magnussen excel after difficult periods with McLaren and Renault. With Haas currently vying for P6 in the constructors’ championship, Ocon sees an opportunity to shine.

**Why Haas Wanted Ocon:**
Komatsu identified Ocon as his preferred choice to race alongside Bearman several months ago. Komatsu believes Ocon can thrive in the right environment. With Bearman, a highly-rated rookie, in one seat, Komatsu needed experience in the other, making Ocon an upgrade over Nico Hulkenberg, who is moving to Sauber/Audi.

The agreement with Ocon was finalized a few months ago, with the announcement delayed due to minor contract details, which is typical in F1. Attracting a race winner like Ocon, especially over competitors like Williams and Sauber/Audi, is a significant boost for Haas. Ocon’s multi-year commitment demonstrates confidence in Haas’ project, enhancing the team’s appeal to commercial partners.

Ocon has a track record of quickly adapting to new teams, crucial for the competitive midfield battle expected next year. Komatsu’s early decision on the driver lineup reflects his confidence in the project and owner Gene Haas’ support for his choices.
