Washington Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger publicly criticized the team’s decision to trade cornerback Kendall Fuller to the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the deal for quarterback Alex Smith.
The trade, which also involved a third-round pick in the 2018 draft, was reported by multiple media outlets on Tuesday night. Swearinger, who joined the Redskins on a three-year contract last offseason, expressed his displeasure on Twitter.
“Never Saw Any Bulls— Like This In My Life!!” Swearinger tweeted, a post he later deleted. “Idc who I rub wrong because you never sat in a meeting nor put in work with my dawg!! People say they wanna win right but you throw away your best defender!?!? Somebody you can set a standard with?!?! #Defense will win championships!!”
In another deleted tweet, Swearinger stated that the Redskins made a “Major Step down from the best slot corner in The Game!!” He also emphasized the importance of defense in winning championships.
Despite his frustration, Swearinger later welcomed the new quarterback, Alex Smith, with another tweet: “Alex Smith Welcome To The Squad We Got Championships To Win!”
Fuller, a third-round pick from Virginia Tech in 2016, led the Redskins’ secondary with four interceptions last season. Smith, who spent the last five seasons with the Chiefs, will officially join the Redskins when the new NFL business year begins on March 14.
