Coach Michael Maguire Breaks Silence on Coaching Future, Stays On

Michael Maguire, coach of the Wests Tigers, has ended speculation about his future with the club by releasing a statement confirming he will remain head coach after a review of football operations. Despite finishing 13th and losing 38-0 to the Canterbury Bulldogs in the final round, Maguire’s position is secure.

Maguire, who signed a two-year contract extension in December, expressed his commitment to improving the team’s performance. He acknowledged the challenges of the past season but maintained confidence in the club’s long-term success.

“I’m happy to continue working towards our vision of turning this proud club around,” Maguire stated. He emphasized the importance of a consistent recruitment policy and building a strong foundation with passionate players and promising juniors.

Amid speculation about Tim Sheens returning as a coaching coordinator, Maguire welcomed the collaboration, focusing on creating a strong, sustainable roster. He stressed the need for continuous self-improvement and elevating the squad’s performance to compete at a top level.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe praised Maguire’s efforts during challenging times, highlighting structural and procedural changes resulting from the review. The club is committed to becoming a high-performing organization, supported by strong financials, investments in pathways, and the new Centre of Excellence.

Maguire, who joined the Tigers in 2018 after being released by the Rabbitohs, has yet to lead the team to the finals. However, he remains focused on achieving this goal and looks forward to the upcoming pre-season and spending time with his family.

In his statement, Maguire expressed gratitude for the support received and looked forward to resuming work on November 1 with returning and new players.
