Jordan Love to Sit Out Packers Practice Amid Contract Negotiations.
Quarterback Jordan Love will not participate in Green Bay Packers practice sessions while his contract extension negotiations remain unresolved, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst. Love, who arrived at training camp last week, appeared in street clothes during the first workout alongside head coach Matt LaFleur.
Gutekunst expressed understanding of Love’s position and emphasized the importance of his presence in practice, but confirmed that Love would not practice until a deal is finalized. Despite this, Gutekunst remains optimistic about reaching an agreement soon, noting that Love is involved in other team activities.
Coach LaFleur is not overly concerned, believing Love will get necessary mental reps even if he misses physical practice. With Love sitting out, the Packers are left with Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt as their only quarterbacks for training camp.
Love’s work ethic and commitment were praised by teammate Sean Clifford, who highlighted Love’s consistent presence and dedication during organized team activities.
Love’s contract, which expires at the end of the season, was extended for one year in May 2023, providing $13.5 million guaranteed with an additional $9 million in incentives. This extension allowed the Packers to evaluate Love as he stepped into the starting role following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets. Love led the Packers to a 10-9 season and an NFC divisional playoff appearance.
Despite efforts to secure a new contract for Love, other quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence have signed substantial deals. Packers receiver Christian Watson voiced strong support for Love, affirming his worth and expressing hope for a quick resolution.
Love, 25, had a successful season with 64.2% pass completion, 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His performance improved significantly towards the end of the season, with a particularly notable stretch leading to a playoff victory against the Dallas Cowboys.
Gutekunst acknowledged the potential risks of Love sitting out but remained confident in the ongoing negotiations. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Kenny Clark has signed a three-year extension, ensuring his stay with the Packers through 2027.
Other updates include right tackle Zach Tom returning from injury and participating in individual drills, while several other players, including TE Tucker Kraft and WR Jayden Reed, are recovering from various injuries.
