Former University of Washington (UW) head coach Kalen DeBoer has significantly increased his salary by moving to the University of Alabama. The University of Alabama Board of Trustees recently approved his contract, which will pay DeBoer at least $87 million over eight years, with a final season salary of $11.75 million and $250,000 annual raises. Additionally, DeBoer could earn substantial bonuses, including $600,000 for a national championship game appearance and $875,000 for winning the title.

DeBoer’s departure from UW, where he earned $4.2 million in his last season, has been a point of contention for many fans. However, the dramatic salary increase offers a clearer understanding of his decision. Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne emphasized the importance of investing in high-level coaches to maintain the department’s success.

Jedd Fisch, who succeeded DeBoer at UW, also saw a significant pay raise, moving from the University of Arizona to Washington with a salary increase from $3.4 million to $7.5 million in 2024.

While financial incentives played a role, reports suggest DeBoer was also drawn to the opportunity to coach Alabama, the dominant program in college football over the past 15 years, and to replace legendary coach Nick Saban.

Kalen DeBoer raised eyebrows when one of the first things he did at Alabama was change the Tide’s practice schedule.

After all, former coach Nick Saban, a seven-time national championship head coach, was renowned for the efficiency of Alabama’s workouts.

“I’ve been at a lot of different levels when it comes to putting a team together,” DeBoer said confidently at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin this offseason.

“There’s a lot that goes into development and putting together a practice that I think is efficient.”
