After Leeds had dismantled Norwich in their play-off semi-final the team gathered in a huddle on the Elland Road pitch. Standing in the middle of it, the club’s latest icon, Archie Gray.
At just 17 he’s become a regular in a team that registered 90 points, breaking club records along the way. His name has been sang weekly by the Leeds faithful, who adore one of their own like no other, and Gray will become the youngest Leeds player to run out at Wembley since his father in 1996 in Sunday’s play-off final.
Despite his tender age Gray has been a stalwart. He’s made more than 50 appearances, only Ethan Ampadu has been utilised more often than the teenage star.
One Kalvin Phillips was once the darling of Elland Road, although his rise was far less sharp than Gray and he needed the injection of Marcelo Bielsa to ignite his career. Gray seems to be doing that all by himself, rising to every challenge put in front of him.
