New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has openly discussed the “pressure” he feels as he gears up for his second season, with expectations high from his teammates.
The 40-year-old star made a high-profile move to the Big Apple last year after a 18-season stint with the Green Bay Packers, seeking a new challenge. However, Rodgers’ debut at MetLife Stadium was abruptly cut short in Week 1 due to a severe injury, just moments into the game.
Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles when Leonard Floyd sacked him, ending his first game for the Jets after only four snaps. Now preparing for his return amid his recovery, Rodgers is facing the daunting task of bouncing back after the team recorded a 7-10 season in his absence.
Acknowledging the weight on his shoulders, Rodgers expressed his readiness to tackle the challenges of his comeback season, stating: “I like that kind of pressure. It’s a tough market (New York) to play in. It’s not for everybody. I relish that opportunity. That’s the way the NFL is. I’m not saying anything monumental.”
He further emphasized the relentless nature of the NFL, noting: “This is how it is every single year,” and added that even established players like himself must continually prove their worth or risk being replaced. “You just might not say it, but as you get older in the league, if you don’t perform, they’re going to get rid of you. Or bring in the next guy to take over.”
The quarterback expressed his determination to make the most of his time in New York and finish his illustrious career on a high note, following last season’s challenges. He confidently stated: “I can still throw with the best of ’em. I don’t want to go out,” and added, “as I’ve said before, as a bum.”
Woody Johnson the Jets owner, also has high hopes for the 2024 NFL season, having expressed his confidence in the team back in March. He described success as being ‘in the eye of the beholder’ as he looks forward to the new term.
