Winfield, 25, has signed a four-year, £67 million contract with £36 million guaranteed, another record for a safety. His annual earnings surpass Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander by £20,000, two years after his historic deal.
Previously, Derwin James held the title of the highest-paid safety following his four-year, £61 million extension with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, which included £33 million guaranteed. Winfield is now set to pocket over £1.6 million more per season, becoming the first safety to cross the $20 million annual earning mark and overtaking Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
David Mulugheta of Athletes First, Winfield’s agent, took to social media to announce the historic moment after a video call with his client, posting screenshots of their exchange. “Couldn’t be happier to make this call and let (Antoine Winfield Jr.) know he just made HISTORY! ” exclaimed the Instagram caption.
“The first time a safety is the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL. In a year where the value of safeties has been questioned, the Buccaneer Organization, the Glazer Family and GM Jason Licht have stepped up and taken care of one of their most valuable family members.”
Congratulations Antoine, you have accomplished something that has never been done before. You will forever be etched in history as the first. I appreciate your trust and cannot wait to see you back on the field.”
