This past Saturday, within the confines of the SJB Pavilion, a venue pulsating with the energy of 9,631 attendees, none held a higher celestial status than the esteemed actor and ardent Ole Miss basketball enthusiast, Morgan Freeman.
Frequently gracing the courtside seats adorned in Rebel apparel, Freeman has become a familiar face at significant basketball games in Oxford.
Despite the widespread acknowledgment of his Ole Miss fandom within local circles, many may not have been cognizant of Freeman’s affiliation with the program, stemming from his residency in Mississippi.
This past Saturday, however, his presence became particularly noteworthy due to an unconventional encounter with Auburn player Johni Broome.
During a critical moment in the game, a pause in play occurred on Freeman’s side of Craddock Court, with Tigers center Johni Broome positioned directly in front of him.
In an attempt to capture Broome’s attention, Freeman lightly tugged at the back of Broome’s No. 4 jersey, only to have his hand swatted away by the unsuspecting player.
It was then revealed that Freeman, known by many as the voice of “God” and even the President of the United States, was involved in this unexpected court-side interaction.
In his postgame press conference, Broome expressed his initial confusion, assuming it was an Ole Miss fan grabbing his jersey.
Once he recognized Freeman, he apologized, revealing his admiration for the actor and recounting Freeman’s words of encouragement to “just keep on playing.”
Despite the unexpected interruption, Broome delivered an impressive performance, contributing 15 points, all in the second half, along with nine rebounds and seven assists.
His pivotal role aided in Auburn’s comeback from a 13-point deficit, ultimately securing a resounding 91-77 victory.
After a year-long hiatus, Freeman has made a return to the SJB Pavilion, attending several games this season.
The revitalized excitement infused by coach Chris Beard has elevated attendance, with back-to-back games against Auburn and Mississippi State witnessing record-breaking crowds.
The Mississippi State game, in particular, drew an astounding 10,630 spectators, marking the largest turnout in the history of the basketball program.
Freeman’s presence, coupled with the fervor surrounding Ole Miss basketball, has undeniably contributed to the electrifying atmosphere within the arena.
